My stay at Upper Humber Settlement in Cormack, Newfoundland, from May 9-12, 2024, was an unforgettable experience that exceeded all my expectations. This bed and breakfast farm stay is a true gem, nestled in a beautifully curated farmhouse set in a serene forest. From the moment I arrived, I felt incredibly welcomed and at home, thanks to the warm hospitality of Lauralee and Mark.

If you're looking to immerse yourself in an authentic Newfoundland family environment, Upper Humber Settlement is the perfect place. I was fortunate to participate in all four unique experiences offered by Lauralee and Mark, each providing a deep connection to Newfoundland's land, heritage, and traditional cooking.

One of the highlights was the foraging experience, which culminated in cooking moose with alder cream sauce on a brazier in the garden. The meal was absolutely delicious, and the other meals were equally impressive, featuring homemade smoky bacon, moose sausages, and delectable date squares. The food was a testament to the deep-rooted connection Newfoundlanders have with their land and their culinary traditions.

Lauralee's gentle guidance during our jam-making session with wild blueberries was a delightful experience. Paired with homemade tea cakes and traditional Newfoundland music played on a vintage record player, it was a charming and memorable activity that offered a taste of the region's rich cultural tapestry.

The storytelling dinner provided by Lauralee was another standout experience. With each delicious course, she wove a moving tale about the early settlers of the Upper Humber area, making the dinner both engaging and enlightening. It was a unique way to connect with the history and culture of the place, adding depth and meaning to each bite.

A very special moment was Lauralee sharing her Mi'kmaq indigenous heritage through a fire ceremony and guided meditation. This profound experience added a meaningful layer to my stay, offering a rare glimpse into the spiritual traditions of the land and its people. Lauralee and Mark's kindness and attentiveness made my stay incredibly comfortable and unique.

They went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect, making this experience one of the highlights of my trip to Newfoundland. I can't recommend Upper Humber Settlement highly enough for anyone looking to explore Newfoundland culture and tradition in a welcoming and homely setting. Upper Humber Settlement offers more than just a place to stay; it provides a truly unique connection with place and culture.

Lauralee and Mark have created an environment where guests can deeply engage with Newfoundland's heritage, traditions, and the natural beauty of the land. This experience is a must for anyone seeking an authentic and enriching adventure in Newfoundland.
