What is a CSA?

CSAs are Community Supported Agriculture programs and they are a great way to connect local community members with local farmers. Becoming a member of this program will provide you with weekly access to fresh and local produce bypassing the need to buy unknowingly sourced produce from the grocery stores during the farming season when there is so much availability for local produce. CSAs have a global goal to strengthen a sense of community through local markets and food distribution and we are proud to have added this service to our farm in 2021.

The model is rather simple; You subscribe to the farm by paying for a “share” at the beginning of the season helping to provide the necessary cash flow when us farmers need it most to buy seeds, perennials and other supplies. Then, as farmers, we grow a wide variety of vegetables throughout the growing season and when the crops are ready for harvest we provide our supporting members with weekly “shares” of fresh vegetables and package it promptly for a local pick-up.

This program is aimed at keeping small, local farms... well, small, local and personal. Your “share” purchase invests in our growing farm and helps to support the surrounding community with fresh naturally grown vegetables that are handpicked in season. We are committed to not using pesticides or herbicides on our farm. It is a lot more work but we think our food is worth it!

How to become a member of our
Paper Bag CSA?

As a member you will pay upfront for the season. By paying in full, this gives us, the farmer, an opportunity to invest in seeds and other supplies, including equipment that we need to start-up the growing season. In return, we commit to providing you with a weekly paper bag of fresh seasonal vegetables from mid July – mid October. Since we are firm believers in reducing waste, we are even going to take extra steps to reduce plastic usage on our farm by providing members with reusable containers for salads and other produce! The Paper Bags will be ready for pick up on Thursday each week of the program (July 7th - October 6th). There will be a drop off bin in the Honesty Market for CSA members to drop off their containers weekly for the following week, or we can arrange to pick up those containers during the weekly pick up.

We offer a one time payment or a 2 payment option plan. Our Paper Bag CSA program costs $630 or two equal payments of $315. (Please note: Limited shares are available and payment will secure your spot in our program). The deadline for signups and payment is April 1st, but we have a funny feeling we will run out of spots before April. So do not hesitate and Sign Up today.

What Products will be in your weekly CSA?

We love variety and are sure you will too! The Paper Bags will change from week to week and they may seem lighter in the early summer season but will make up for it in the fall with our main harvest.  Despite how much is in your early Paper Bags we will ensure that you get your full value of your share over the course of the growing season.

Our Paper Bag CSA works out to be $40/week for 14 weeks. Some weeks the Paper Bags will include Farm Fresh Chicken Eggs, depending on what is available we may even add a few special eggs in from our other bird coops including our duck, guinea fowl or quail coops. Every egg has its own special taste and nutrients.

Below is a list of other produce we will be offering this season, but we are not limiting our growing selection and you may find other farm fresh goodies in your box as well:

Salad Greens - Green Lettuce, Spinach, Kale, Salad Mix, Swiss Chard

Greenhouse - Various Tomatoes, Green Peppers, Hot Peppers, Cucumbers

Other Produce - Radishes, Various Onions, Kohlrabi, Celery, Cabbage, Red Cabbage, Turnip, Carrot,

Rainbow Carrots, Broccoli, Beets, Potatoes, Baby Potatoes, Pumpkin, Zucchini, Winter Squash, Snap Peas, Beans, Peas, and maybe a few other surprises

Canned Goodness - Pickles, Chutney, Jelly - All Made with our farm fresh or wildly foraged local ingredients

Herbs – Cilantro, Parsley, Basil, Chives, Dill, Thyme, Rosemary and Mint

We even include some of our farm grown herbal teas as well as products from other local producers including but not limited to Cormack Bee Company - Local Honey, Cormack Farmers Market - Fresh Butter and Cream, Locally Roasted organic and free-trade Coffee from Gros Morne Coffee Roasters. From time to time we will also source Local Micro-Greens and Produce available from select producers who are mindful and have commitments to naturally grown produce, just like us!

Still not sure?
Here is what past CSA members have to say...

I heard about the CSA program being offered by Upper Humber Settlement and I was so excited to try it - fresh vegetables from a local farm once per week sounded wonderful!  But this program was so much more than that - organic locally grown produce, opportunity to taste new vegetables that I had never tried before, delicious bottled goodies such as homemade salsa and mustard pickles (some of the best I have ever tasted!) and goodies from other local businesses such as butter, cream and honey!

At Thanksgiving, we received all the fixin's for a beautiful meal, including a homemade apple dessert.  Congrats on a great program, I look forward to seeing what's next!

We absolutely love the CSA program from Upper Humber Settlement.  We look forward to every Thursday to see what surprises are in our CSA bag.

Mark and Lauralee have really created something special, and we love feeling like we’re a small part of their efforts to create a healthy and sustainable farm.

Signing up for the CSA program at The Settlement NL was a game changer for me and my family. My little girl couldn't wait to see what was in Mom's brown paper bag. I don't know who was more excited to eat the fresh veggies more, me or her!

I tried new vegetables that I never heard of before and Lauralee was really great at giving me recipe ideas and helping me make their veggies a part of every meal! It has never been easier to eat healthy as this past summer with the help of their CSA!
